Horan Tallies Double-Double With 56 Assists and 10 Digs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Freshman setter Taylor Horan (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) notched her fifth double-double of the season with a match-best and career-high 56 assists along with 10 digs as visiting Washington College topped host Catholic, 3-1, (20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 2-517) at the DuFour Center in a non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday evening. The Shorewomen improve to 13-5 on the year, while the Cardinals drop to 18-6.
In the opening set, Catholic led 20-18 before winning five of the final seven points of the set to win by five points. A kill by Mary Paige Nesfelder ended the opening set.
The Shorewomen turned the tables in the second set with a 6-2 run to close out the second after the two teams were tied at 19-19. Junior outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, Md./River Hill) capped off the second with a kill. Washington hit .256 in the second set.
Following an attack error by the Shorewomen, the Cardinals led 19-17 in the third set before the Shorewomen used an 8-2 set-closing run to turn the two-point deficit into a four-point win. Lee finished off the second set in a row with a kill.
Washington raced out to a 19-7 lead in the fourth set following a service ace by sophomore defensive specialist Audrey Utchen (San Ramon, Calif./Monte Vista). The Cardinals got it within six points at 22-16 on a Maria Juelle service ace, but the Shorewomen, who hit .346 in the clinching set, won three of the last four points to win the set by eight points. An attack miscue by the Cardinals ended the set and match.
Lee led all players with 20 kills, her second 20 or more kill effort of the season, and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Joining Lee in double figures in kills were sophomore outside hitter Caitlin Cooney (Gaithersburg, Md./Covenant Life School) with 14 kills and freshman middle hitter Alaina Geissberger (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) had 10 finishers. Utchen had 20 digs to lead all players, while sophomore outside hitter/defensive specialist Rachel Baker (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) had 11 digs. WC hit .225 as a team in the win.
Nesfelder and Michelle Seals each had double-doubles for the Cardinals. Nesfelder had 11 kills and 11 digs to lead the Cardinals in both categories, while Seals had a team-high 30 assists and added 10 digs. Audrey Bizak had four blocks to lead all players.
The Shorewomen are back in action on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. at home versus visiting Delaware Valley.
