Barry With Six Saves
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Jeannie Jasinski scored the lone goal of the match in the 23rd minute as host Ursinus downed visiting Washington College, 1-0, at Patterson Field in a Centennial Conference women's soccer match on Wednesday evening. The Bears improve to 6-6-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen fall to 3-9-2 and 0-6-1 respectively.
Jasinski scored the lone goal of the night at 22:34 when she headed in a bouncing cross off the foot of Valerie Bedrock. Earlier in the first half, the Shorewomen almost got onto the scoreboard in the 11th minute when off of a corner kick, junior midfielder Caitlin Byrnes (Crofton, Md./South River) had a header that was stopped by an Ursinus defender to keep the match scoreless.
In the second half, the Ursinus defense came up with a pair of team saves on shots by WC junior forward Bailey Howard (Laurel, Md./Reservoir), with the second one coming with 4:44 left for the hosts third team save of the contest. The other team save by the Bears against Howard was at 58:21. Washington's last shot came with 80 seconds left, but the shot by senior back Taylor Matterson (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) went wide.
Ursinus had six total saves in the match, three from the team and three from goalkeeper Courtney Sullivan. For Washington, sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Barry (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) made six saves. The Shorewomen had one team save in the second half, turning away a header by the Bears Jacqueline Smiler in the 71st minute.
The Bears held a 19-7 advantage in shots and had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Shorewomen return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. kick against visiting Franklin & Marshall in Centennial action.
