Barry Stops Six Shots
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Ursinus scored the lone goal of the match in the 31st minute en route to a 1-0 Centennial Conference women's soccer win over host Washington College on Wednesday afternoon at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium. The Bears are now 6-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the CC, while the Shorewomen are now 4-7-2 and 1-5-0 respectively.
Ursinus took a 1-0 lead at the 30:17 mark when Adriana Munoz Carbonell scored off of her own rebound after her initial shot hit the left post. The scoring chance started after Carbonell received a long pass from the Ursinus back. The Shorewomen's best chance to score in the first half came 22:57 into the contest on a free kick by senior midfielder Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) from about 40 yards out that just went over the crossbar.
In the second half, Washington had a chance 5:19 into the second half on a header by sophomore wing Caitlin Byrnes (Crofton, Md./South River) that went high over the crossbar. Ursinus almost made it 2-0 twice in a 61-second span, but Valerie Bedrock's shot was saved by junior back Taylor Matteson (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) in the 52nd minute and in the 53rd minute Alexis Haug hit the left post. The Shorewomen's last chance to tie it came with 57 ticks left on a Matteson shot off of a corner kick, but the shot sailed high and the Bears ran out the clock.
Ursinus held a 23-4 edge in shots and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. In goal, Kara DiJoseph made one save for the shutout for the Bears, while freshman goalie Melissa Barry (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) turned away six saves.
Washington travels to Franklin & Marshall for a 4:00 p.m. conference match on Saturday.
