CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Visiting Goucher College scored the game's only goal in the 64th minute to defeat host Washington College, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Gophers improved to 3-5-1 with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 3-4-1 with the loss.
The Shorewomen took four shots in the first 11 minutes of the game, but could not get another shot off during the period. Goucher's lone shot of the half came in the 38th minute and was blocked by a Washington defender. The Gophers held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half.
Goucher scored on its first shot on goal at 63:43 when Colleen McCawley tipped in a ball that was loose in the box for her first goal of the season. Washington's final shot on goal came at the 70:16 mark when senior midfielder Kathleen Maleski (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) had her shot saved by Goucher goalkeeper Juliana Harkavy.
Washington finished the game with an 8-7 edge in shots. Goucher recorded five of the game's seven corner kicks.
Harkavy finished with four saves in the win for the Gophers, while freshman goalkeeper Melissa Barry (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) made two saves in the loss for the Shorewomen.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at Delaware Valley.
