Smith Scores Twice in Win for Shorewomen
HARRISBURG. Pa. -- Visiting Washington College scored three second-half goals to defeat host Penn State-Harrisburg, 3-0, in non-conference women's soccer action today in Harrisburg, Pa. The Shorewomen improved to 3-3-1 with the win, while the Lions fell to 5-3 with the loss. Senior midfielder Heather Smith (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) scored twice in the victory for Washington.
Junior forward Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep) netted the Shorewomen's first goal at 60:10 off an assist from junior forward Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep). Smith then scored the first of her two goals off an assist from freshman midfielder Laura Tocci (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) at 69:04. Smith's second goal of the game, at 83:49, came on a penalty kick after freshman forward Ashley Shortt (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) was taken down in the box by a Lion defender.
Washington took 10 shots in the first half and 11 in the second, while limiting the Lions to just three shots, all in the second half. The Shorewomen also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Barry (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) made one save in the shutout for the Shorewomen, while Mackenzie Gates made 10 saves for Penn State-Harrisburg.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference home game against Goucher.
