TOWSON, MD -- Host Goucher College broke a scoreless tie in the 50th minute and made that goal stand up as the Gophers (3-0) defeated visiting Washington College, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game today in Towson, MD.
Goucher held a 5-2 edge in shots in the first half. After a Washington shot was blocked early in the second half, the Gophers scored on their first shot of the period as Gaby Davis scored on a direct kick at 49:06.
Washington freshman forward/midfielder Bailey Howard (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) got off a potential game-tying shot at 83:43, but a Goucher defender stopped it for a team save. Goucher then took three shots in a 66-second span as the Gophers tried to take a two-goal lead but Washington sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Potochney (Newark, DE/Newark) saved the first, the second was blocked, and the third - a header by Sherlanda Buskey at 87:26 - went wide.
Goucher held a 12-9 advantage in shots in the game. Each team recorded three penalty corners in the contest. Potochney made four saves in the loss for the Shorewomen, while Lexi Rudolph made two for the Gophers.
The Shorewomen (1-2) return to action Wednesday with their home opener, a 7:00 p.m. game against Immaculata.
