Sophomore Scores One Goal, Assists on Other in Win
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Sophomore forward Kira Pancotti (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Briarcliff) scored one goal and assisted on the other as host Washington College blanked visiting Neumann, 2-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shorewomen improved to 2-1 with the win, while the Knights fell to 2-2-1 with the loss.
Pancotti gave the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead at 28:56 when she dribbled through a defender's legs, ran to the goal and scored. The Shorewomen's second goal came in the second half when Pancotti sent a ball ahead to sophomore forward Jennifer Kiarsis (Rye, NY/Canterbury School, CT) on a break. Kiarsis went straight to goal and sent the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the net at 81:59.
The Shorewomen's defense kept Neumann away from the goal for most of the game, limiting the Knights to just one shot (a first-half attempt which went wide) and one corner kick (also in the first half). Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Ripple (Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) recorded her first career shutout.
Washington got off 17 shots in the win and recorded six corner kicks.
Neumann goalkeeper Jacqueline McAllister notched six saves in the loss.
The victory gave the Shorewomen back-to-back wins and back-to-back shutouts for the first time in six years. Washington last pulled off those feats in 2003 with a 4-0 win over Notre Dame (MD) on September 4th and a 2-0 win over Villa Julie three days later.
The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. home game against Penn State-Berks.
