Shorewomen Get Off School-Record 40 Shots in Win
WASHINGTON, DC -- Visiting Washington College fired off a school-record 40 shots and recorded 18 corner kicks in a 3-0 non-conference women's soccer win over host Trinity University this afternoon in Washington, DC. The Shorewomen improved to 4-2-1 with the win, while the Tigers fell to 3-5 with the loss.
The Shorewomen scored on their 13th shot of the game as freshman Jen Stafford (Lake George, NY/Berkshire School, MA) sent a cross into the box which Trinity goalkeeper Cristina Martinez tried to intercept, but instead found sophomore Kira Pancotti (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Briarcliff) open in front of the goal. Pancotti booted the ball in for the game's first score at 25:08. Freshman Katie DeRosa (Silver Spring, MD/Academy of the Holy Cross) made it 2-0 when she fired in a loose ball during a scramble in front of the goal following a corner kick at 37:34. The goal was the first of DeRosa's collegiate career.
Stafford netted the only goal of the second half when she scored on a loose ball from just to the left of the net at 55:44.
Washington's 40 shots eclipsed the school record of 38 set one year ago today in a 5-0 win over Trinity.
Cristina Martinez made 13 saves in the first half for Trinity, while Courtney Haines made 12 saves in the second half.
Washington's four wins this season equal the Shorewomen's victory total from the past three seasons combined and their highest single-season win total since the 2003 season.
The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Franklin & Marshall.
