#10 Shorewomen Win Division III Varsity Eight at Knecht Cup

Shorewomen Also FInish Second in Division III Second Varsity Eight

CHERRY HILL, NJ -- The 10th-ranked Washington College women's rowing team won the Division III varsity eight and finished second in the Division III second varsity eight at the Knecht Cup regatta held yesterday and today in Cherry Hill, NJ.

The Shorewomen's varsity eight won its heat in 6:59.19 to advance to the finals. Second-ranked Trinity's third varsity eight raced as a "B" boat in the event and took second in the heat in 7:07.58. Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference rivals Mary Washington (7:43.28), North Park (8:17.07), and Richard Stockton (8:27.77) were third, fifth, and sixth in the heat, respectively. The College of New Jersey was fourth in 7:49.57. 

In the final, Washington took first place in 6:56.13. Eleventh-ranked Marietta, the defending Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference Champion, was second in 7:04.19. Trinity's third varsity eight was third in in 7:04.43, while its second varsity eight, racing as its "A" boat, was fourth in 7:09.54. Another Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference school, Bryn Mawr, was fifth in 7:39.55, while Mary Washington was sixth in 7:48.47. 

The Shorewomen were second in the Division III women's second varsity eight - a one-race event - in 7:38.95. Marietta won the race in 7:21.94, while Mary Washington was third in 9:00.57

Washington also had a boat of novice rowers compete in the Division III women's varsity four. The Shorewomen finished third in their heat in 8:59.01. The College of New Jersey won the heat in 8:16.46, while Bryn Mawr was second in 8:32.18.

Sophomore Christie Phebus (Trappe, MD/Easton) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's varsity eight. Sophomore Kelly Bird (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) sat stroke, senior Rachel Benders (Cleveland Heights, OH/Beaumont School) was in the seven seat, senior Kate Fiori (Boston, MA/Dana Hall School) was in the six seat, sophomore Mickey Fili (Sparks, MD/Hereford) was in the five seat, sophomore Taira Sullivan (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) sat in the four seat, junior Valeria DiLisi (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) sat in the three seat, sophomore Ashley Myles (Chester Springs, PA/Owen J. Roberts) was in the two seat, and junior Ellie Hilton (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) was the bow.

Junior Abigail Thomas (Hughesville, MD/Thomas Stone) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's second varsity eight. Sophomore Krystal Brostek (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) sat stroke, junior Emily Sahadeo (College Park, MD/Elizabeth Seton) was in the seven seat, freshman Leslie Rothstein (Lower Merion, PA/Lower Meion) was in the six seat, senior Lauren Halla (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) sat in the five seat, freshman Kayla Noll (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) was in the four seat, freshman Giavonella Knapp (Vineland, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) sat in the three seat, freshman Maggie Perry (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) was in the two seat, and junior Allie Everhart (New Market, MD/Linganore) was the bow.

Freshman Jaclyn Gibbons (Hingham, MA/Hingham) was the coxswain of the Shorewomen's novice four, which competed in the Division III women's varsity four. Freshman Kelly Dobroski (West Brandywine, PA/Coatesville Area) sat stroke, freshman Michaela Martino (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) was in the three seat, freshman Katie Washart (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) sat in the two seat, and freshman Monica Benitez (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was the bow.

The Shorewomen return to action Saturday when they will take on New Hampshire, Skidmore, and Trinity in Worcester, MA.
