Shorewomen Down Fords In CC Tournament 3-2; Game Against Bullets Suspended Due To Darkness

DiPrimio 2-for-3 and Two RBI Versus Haverford; WC Ahead of Gettysburg 7-3 After Five Innings In Halted Contest

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The top seeded Washington College softball team edged visiting four seed Haverford, 3-2, in its first round game of the 2016 Centennial Conference Softball Tournament at the Washington College Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.  In the team's second round game, the Shorewomen were leading two seed Gettysburg 7-3 after five innings when the game was halted due to darkness.  That game will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.

How It Happened
-In the top of the third inning, Haverford took a 1-0 when Rachel Wolfson doubled to the gap in right-center with one out to score Emily Winesett.
-The Shorewomen answered with two runs in the last of the third to take the lead for good at 2-1.  With nobody out, Elaina DiPrimio singled up the middle to plate both Allyson Meil and Clare Hofstedt to give the hosts a one-run lead. 
-Washington made it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out fielder's choice off the bat of Hofstedt that knocked in Trish Langley as Langley was able to get around the tag of Haverford catcher Kristin Tatum.
-The Fords cut the Shorewomen's lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth with one away as Tatum came home on a throwing error by WC.
-In the top half of the seventh with two outs, Julia Blake singled to shallow right field just over the head of Washington first baseman Hannah Spohn to get the tying run on base and the go ahead run at the plate in Kaitlyn Guild.  Shorewomen pitcher Taylor Harcum was able to strike Guild out swinging to end the game.

For The Shorewomen (21-18)
-Hitting: DiPrimio (2-for-3, two RBI), Hofstedt (1-for-3, RBI, run)
-Pitching: Maddie Bennet (win 12-3, 5 1/3 innings, three hits, two runs, one earned, four walks, five strikeouts), Harcum (save 2, 1 2/3 innings, one hit, zero runs, zero walks, two strikeouts)
-Washington had six hits, drew two walks and left five on the bases.
-The hosts had two errors in the game, leading to one unearned run for the Fords.

For Haverford (20-19)
-Hitting: Wolfson (RBI double)
-Pitching: Kendall Chambers (loss 6-3, four innings, five hits, three runs, two earned, two walks, zero strikeouts), Sara Tauriello (two innings, zero hits, runs and walks, four strikeouts)
-The Fords had four hits and four walks, while stranding seven runners.
-Two errors by Haverford led to one unearned run for WC.

-Washington improves to 3-1 all-time versus Haverford in the CC Tournament.
-It was the Shorewomen's first win in the conference tournament since downing the Fords, 9-0, in the championship game of the 2013 tournament.
-In the other first round game, Gettysburg beat three seed McDaniel 4-1 in the first game of the tournament.
-Haverford eliminated McDaniel from the double elimination tournament in the first elimination game of the tournament, 7-1.
-The tournament, which was slated to begin at 10:00 a.m., started at 11:00 a.m. due to early morning rain in Chestertown.

5/8 v. Gettysburg – 10:00 a.m. (completion of suspended game)
-The winner of the game advances to the championship round.
-The loser will play Haverford in the first full game of Sunday in an elimination game as the loser of that game is eliminated from the Centennial Tournament.  The winner of the elimination game will face the winner of the the suspended Gettysburg-Washington game.
