Harcum Tosses Complete Game In Game Two
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting #9 Salisbury swept host Washington College in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field. The Sea Gulls won game one, 7-0, and took game two, 3-0. It was the home opener for the Shorewomen.
#9 Salisbury 7 Washington College 0 (Game 1)
How It Happened
-The Sea Gulls took advantage of two Washington errors to score three runs, two of which were unearned, to grab a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Paige Knussman homered to left field with one out to also score Molly Simpson, who reached on an error to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Annah Brittingham, who reached on a throwing miscue, scored on an error all the way from first to cap the scoring in the frame.
-Simpson made it 4-0 in the top half of the fourth on a homer down the left field line with two outs.
-Salisbury scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to round out the scoring.
For The Shorewomen (7-10)
-Hitting: Five different players with a hit in the game.
-Pitching: Maddie Bennett (loss 3-2, six innings, nine hits, six runs, four earned, three walks, two strikeouts)
-Washington committed three errors in the loss and led to two Salisbury runs.
-The Shorewomen did not draw a walk in the game.
For Salisbury (15-3)
-Hitting: Knussman (3-for-5, three RBI, two runs, home run), Simpson (2-for-4, two RBI, two runs, home run), Caitlin Lake (two runs), Kim Dorsey (2-for-3, RBI)
-Pitching: Brittingham (win 6-2, complete game five-hitter, no walks and eight strikeouts)
-Salisbury did not commit an error.
-The Sea Gulls had 10 hits, drew four walks and had three players hit by a pitch.
-The Sea Gulls left 11 on base, while the Shorewomen left three on base.
#9 Salisbury 3 Washington College 0 (Game 2)
How It Happened
-Salisbury scored the only runs of the second game in the top half of the third. Rachel Spadin led off the inning reaching on an error. The next batter, LeAnne Collins dropped down a bunt and reached first with no throw. Spadin took second and headed for third and the throw to get her at third was high and went to the corner in left field. Spadin and Collins both scored to give the Sea Gulls a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Brittingham launched a home run over the centerfield fence to make it 3-0 and capped the scoring.
-The Shorewomen in the bottom half of the sixth had two on with nobody out, but Hannah Spohn hit into a double play and Paige Briganti popped out to first base to end the threat.
For The Shorewomen (7-11)
-Hitting: Clare Hofstedt (2-for-3)
-Pitching: Taylor Harcum (loss 3-6, complete game, three unearned runs, six hits, one walk, three strikeouts)
-The Shorewomen had six hits in the game and drew one walk by Spohn.
-WC had three errors in the field leading to all three Salisbury runs.
For Salisbury (16-3)
-Hitting: Brooke Mizelle (2-for-3), Brittingham (home run), Collins (1-for-3, run, walk)
-Pitching: Mizelle (win 10-1, six innings, six hits, one walk, two strikeouts), Annie Pietanza (save 2, one inning, one strikeout)
-The Sea Gulls had six hits and worked out a walk in the second game.
-Salisbury did not commit an error in the field.
-WC left six on base, while Salisbury left five.
