Best Hood 6-3 Before Falling To Host William Peace, 11-4
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Washington College softball team split a pair of games in the second day of the Grand Slam Triangle Classic at William Peace University on Sunday afternoon. The Shorewomen downed Hood in the first game of the day for their first win of the year, 6-3, before dropping an 11-4 contest to host William Peace in the second game of the afternoon.

How It Happened
-The Blazers got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Kayli Paugh singled to left with two away to score Sophia Leaman to give Hood a 1-0 lead.
-Washington answered with three two-out runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Taylor Harcum singled to center to send home both Paige Briganti and Allyson Meil. Harcum would come around to score on a base hit to right-center by Trish Langley.
-The top of the fifth saw the Shorewomen plate three more runs to push their lead to 6-1. Maddie Bennett singled to center to score both Meredith Maynard and Briganti to make it 5-1 and Bennett scored on a two-bagger to center off the bat of Elaina DiPrimio to give WC a five-run lead.
-Hood took advantage of a two-out error by WC to reduce the lead to 6-3 as Paugh homered to center to also score Ashley Fourcade, who reached on an error.
-The Blazers had the tying run at the plate in the last of the sixth, but back-to-back foul outs to Gabrielle Edwards at third ended the threat.
-Harcum got Hood 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
For The Shorewomen (1-2)
-Hitting: Briganti (3-for-3, two runs scored), Bennett (2-for-3, two RBI), Harcum (two RBI)
-Pitching: Harcum (win 1-1, four innings, two unearned runs, no walks and three strikeouts), Bennett (three innings, one run and a pair of strikeouts on two hits)
-Washington had 10 hits in the win, while committing two errors in the field.
For Hood (1-3)
-Hitting: Paugh (2-for-4, three RBI, home run)
-Pitching: Paugh (loss 1-1, complete game, six runs allowed on 10 hits, walking two and fanning seven)
-The Blazers had six hits in the loss.
-Hood's Beth Laque is the sister of Michelle Laque '08. Laque pitched four years for the Shorewomen from 2005-08.
-It was the first meeting between the two Maryland colleges.

How It Happened
-The Pacers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning with nobody out. Lindsey Wiggins scored on a single by Morgan Farmer to center for the game's first run and Caroline Womble came home on a wild pitch for the second run of the frame.
-Washington responded with two to tie it in the bottom of the first with a pair of one out runs. Alison Pusey plated Maynard on a base hit to left to cut the lead to 2-1 and Briganti scored on an RBI single to right by DiPrimio.
-In the top of the second with one out, Womble doubled to center to plate Morgan Bryant to give the Pacers a 3-2 lead. William Peace tried to make it 4-2, but Wiggins was thrown out at the plate on a throw from right by Clare Hofstedt.
-The Pacers did make it 4-2 in the top of the third with one out when Kacy Haithcock grounded out to shortstop that drove in Farmer from third base.
-In the top half of the fourth, Kelsey Durham scored on a base hit to right by Farmer to make it 5-2 with one away. William Peace made it 6-2 when the next hitter, Heather McLean hit a sac fly to left that chased in Wiggins.
-In the top of the fifth and sixth innings, the Pacers scored a run in each frame to take an 8-2 lead.
-The Shorewomen got two runs in the bottom half of the sixth on an error and groundout to cut the lead to 8-4.
-Brittany Propri hit a three-run homer to left-center with two away in the top of the seventh to give the Pacers an 11-4 lead.
For The Shorewomen (1-4)
-Hitting: Maynard (two hits), DiPrimio (two hits), Hannah Spohn (two hits)
-Pitching: Harcum (loss 1-2)
-Washington had 11 hits in the game and in the field committed three errors.
For William Peace (10-4)
-Hitting: Womble (4-for-4, two hits and two RBI), Propri (2-for-4, three RBI and two runs scored), Farmer (3-for-4, two RBI), McLean (two hits), Wiggins (three runs, two walks and two hits)
-Pitching: Farmer (win 6-1, tossed final 6.2 innings giving up two runs, one earned, three strikeouts)
-The Pacers had 15 hits and one error in the game.
-It was the second all-time meeting between the Shorewomen and Pacers as the Shorewomen won 7-2 in 2013.
-Briganti hit .750 in the four games, going 9-for-12 this weekend.
-Erin Spinden chalked up her first career RBI with her RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
