Shorewomen Take Two From Cardinals, 3-1 and 6-3

Team Scores Five Runs In Top of Seventh in Game Two to Rally and Complete Sweep

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Visiting Washington College swept host Catholic in a non-conference softball doubleheader this afternoon at Catholic University of America.  The Shorewomen took game one by a 3-1 score and in game two rallied from 3-1 down with five runs in the top of the seventh to capture a 6-3 victory.  The Shorewomen are now 13-13 on the year, while the Cardinals fall to 10-12.

In game one, with one out in the top of the third inning, senior Suzanne Patinella (Fallston, Md./Maryvale Prep) singled to centerfield to drive in freshman Meredith Maynard (Bristol, Conn./St. Paul Catholic).  In the top of the fourth, senior Clare Hofstedt (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) scored on an error to give WC a 2-0 lead.

Catholic got on the board in the last of the fifth when Kristina Lozupone with two away singled to center to drive in Amy Laughner to cut the lead to 2-1.  In the top of the seventh, senior Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) doubled to right to score junior Paige Briganti (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) to give Washington a 3-1 lead.

In the circle, Cooper got the win to improve to 9-3 as she went five innings and tied the program record for career starts at 65 in the process, tying Diane Green '06.  She gave up no runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings, which were split between the first through fourth innings and the seventh.  She gave way to junior pitcher Sydnee Schorr (Easton, Md./Easton) who tossed two innings giving up one run on three hits with two strikeouts.  At the plate, Cooper was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Laughner and Lozupone had two hits each for the Cardinals as the hosts had six hits in game one.  In the circle, Kimberly Giurlando took the loss and falls to 1-3.  She went the entire way, giving up three runs, two earned on seven hits, walking four and fanning eight.

In game two, the Shorewomen loaded the bases with one out.  Maynard singled to center to score freshman Taylor Harcum (Hebron, Md./Mardela) to cut the lead to 3-2.  The next batter, Briganti hit a two-run single to drive in both junior Trish Langley (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) and Hofstedt to put Washington ahead 4-3.  With two away, Cooper scored both Maynard and Briganti on a base hit to center to cap the five-run outburst and give the guests a 6-3 lead.  The Cardinals went down in order in the last of the seventh to end the game and twinbill.

In the last of the second, Rachel Valdes served an RBI single to left-center with two outs to plate Alyssa Keane to give Catholic a 1-0 lead.  The Shorewomen tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Harcum singled to right with two away to drive in Cooper.

The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead in the last of the fifth when Victoria Marcavage and Valdes scored on an error with two outs.  The lead would hold up until the top of the seventh.

Cooper and Harcum each had two hits as WC had eight hits in game two, while Briganti and Harcum each drove in two.  Harcum got the win in the circle to improve to 1-1 as she gained her first collegiate victory.  She went all seven innings, giving up five hits, three runs, one earned, walking one and fanning two.

Keane and Valdes had two hits for Catholic as the Cardinals had five hits in the second contest.  Megan Colline took the loss and drops to 5-6.  She went the entire way, giving up eight hits, six earned runs, walking and striking out two.

Washington is home tomorrow for a noon out of conference doubleheader with Neumann.
