Spohn Homers In Game Two For WC
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Visiting Muhlenberg swept a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader from host Washington College on Sunday afternoon at Washington College Softball Field by the scores of 1-0 in the first game and 6-1 in game two. The Mules improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial, while the Shorewomen fall to 5-11 and 0-4 respectively.
In game one, the Mules scored the game's lone run in the top of the seventh inning with two away when a pop up was dropped and Nicole Iannarone scored from third base for the game's lone run. Washington got the tying run on first base, but was unable to score and the Mules came away with the one-run victory.
In the circle for Muhlenberg, Kelsey Jones went the entire way to improve to 3-3 as she struck out eight batters and scattered five hits, while not walking a batter. At the plate, Courtney Simon had two of the Mules' eight hits.
For the Shorewomen in the circle, senior pitcher Kristin Cooper (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) was the hard luck loser and drops to 4-3. She allowed one unearned run on eight hits in going the entire way. She walked three and fanned five. At the plate, freshman Elaina DiPrimio (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) had a pair of hits as the hosts had five.
In the second game, Muhlenberg busted out early with three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead all with one out. Taylor Trifiolis doubled down the left field line to score Alyssa Schell to make it 1-0 and the next hitter, Haley Fedak doubled to left to chase home Trifiolis to give the guests a two-run lead. The scoring in the frame was capped by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Simon to plate Fedak.
In the top of the fourth with two away, Amie DeFeo singled to right to score Sarah Merlo to give the Mules a 4-0 lead. In the last of the fourth, freshman Hannah Spohn (Port Orchard, Wash./South Kitsap) led off the bottom half of the inning with a home run to centerfield to trim the lead to 4-1.
The Mules would extend their lead to five runs at 6-1 with a two-out, two-run double to right-center in the top of the seventh off the bat of Alexis Giovanazzo to score both Simon and Amelia Shelley.
Fedak and Shelley sparked the 14-hit Muhlenberg attack with three hits each, while DeFeo, Merlo and Schell all had two hits. Giaovanazzo plated a pair for the Mules. In the circle, Hayley Peterson went the entire way to improve to 2-0. She allowed seven hits, one earned run, walking one and striking out two.
For Washington, senior pitcher Christine Anderson (Palmer Lake, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) took the loss to fall to 1-5 as she went just 1 1/3 innings. At the plate, junior Paige Briganti (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) had two of the team's five hits.
Washington is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Ursinus for a Centennial Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
