ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The Washington College sailing team finished 11th of 18 schools in an ICSA Co-Ed Dinghy National Semifinal this weekend at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Two semifinal regattas were held simultaneously at Navy this weekend with the top nine teams from each regatta advancing to the ICSA Co-Ed Dinghy National Championship next month in Austin, TX.
Senior skipper Mike Whitford (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and freshman crew Dale Strong (Severna Park, MD/Gunston Day School) placed eighth in A Division, finishing in the top five in four of the division's 14 races. Washington was 14th in B Division. Sophomore Sam Fitzgerald (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farms Academy) and senior Mildred Conroy (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy) skippered in B Division, while freshman TJ Heist (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City), junior Sam Bedinger (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's), and junior Matt Lawler (Alexandria, VA/Christchurch School) split time at crew.
The top nine finishing schools in Washington's semifinal were, in order, top-ranked Georgetown, sixth-ranked Roger Williams, third-ranked Stanford, second-ranked Charleston, 15th-ranked Old Dominion, seventh-ranked Hobart/William Smith, eighth-ranked Brown, 12th-ranked Darthmouth, and 19th-ranked Boston University.
The Washington College sailing team will compete at the ICSA Women's Dinghy National Semifinal beginning May 30th in Austin. The 18-team semifinal regatta will begin on the 30th and conclude once a full rotation is completed - either on the 30th or the next day on the 31st. The top nine finishing teams from that regatta will move on to challenge the nine teams who qualified directly for the final round in the ICSA Women's Dinghy National Championship which will begin on either the 31st or June 1st.
