Shoremen Have Impressive Showing at Yellow Jacket Invitational

Shoremen Go 21-2 in Singles Matches, 9-1 in Doubles

ASHLAND, Va. — The Washington College men's tennis team opened up its 2017-18 competition season at Randolph-Macon's Yellow Jacket Invitational yesterday and today. The Shoremen went 9-1 in doubles and 21-2 in singles in the tournament, which was played with a flighted team-by-team round-robin match-up format. Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan joined the Shoremen and the host Yellow Jackets at the tournament. 

Yellow Jacket Invitational

Doubles
- The Shoremen went an impressive 9-1 in doubles. Chris Salisbury and Jake Sandler scored wins at No. 1 against opponents from Virginia Wesleyan and Bridgewater, while Justin Panepinto and Luke Weaver were winners at No. 2 against the same two teams.
- Kyle Hickey and Andrew Smith won at No. 3 against Virginia Wesleyan and stepped into the No. 1 spot against Randolph-Macon, where they fell in a tie-breaker.
- Koby Bonta and August Meriot were winners at No. 2 against Randolph-Macon and at No. 3 at Bridgewater. Mitchell Evans and John Niswander also went 2-0, winning at No. 3 against Randolph-Macon at No. 4 against Bridgewater. 

Singles
- Salisbury won a pair of matches at No. 1 against opponents from Virginia Wesleyan and Bridgewater. Sandler went 1-1 at No. 2 against the same two schools, falling to Bridgewater.
- Meriot won at No. 3 against Virginia Wesleyan and also won an non-flight singles match against an opponent from Randolph-Macon. Bonta won at No. 3 singles against Bridgewater and at No. 4 singles against Virginia Wesleyan.
- Hickey won three singles matches - No. 4 against Bridgewater, No. 7 against Virginia Wesleyan, and a non-flight match against a Randolph-Macon opponent. Weaver had a win at No. 5 against Virginia Wesleyan and a non-flight win against Bridgewater. Smith won at No. 5 against Bridgewater and at No. 7 against Virginia Wesleyan.
- Panepinto won two matches at No. 6 against Virginia Wesleyan and Bridgewater and a non-flight match against Randolph-Macon. Niswander won a match at No. 7 against Bridgewater and two non-flight matches against Randolph-Macon opponents.
- Evans went 1-1 in non-flight matches, beating an opponent from Bridgewater and losing to one from Randolph-Macon.
