SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Host Swarthmore College, ranked 27th in Division III and sixth in the Atlantic South region, defeated visiting Washington College, 9-0, in a Centennial Conference men's tennis match this afternoon. The Garnet improved to 11-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen slipped to 10-5 and 4-4 with the loss.
The Garnet swept doubles to stake out a 3-0 lead in the match. At No. 1, Ari Cepelewicz and Mark Fallati defeated seniors Dan Boaté (West Chester, Pa./Reed Henderson) and Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's), 8-0. Harrison Lands and Josh Powell bested senior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) and sophomore Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township), 8-4, at No. 2, while John Larkin and Blake Oetting were 8-1 winners against sophomore Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) and freshman Justin Panepinto (Cary, N.C./Middle Creek) at No. 3.
Larkin, the region's 17th-ranked singles player, beat Rajes, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1. Fallati, ranked 19th in singles, defeated Boaté, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2, while Cepelewicz topped Holtschneider, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3. Oetting bested Jeremy Novick, 8-1, at No. 4. Yosuke Higashi picked up an 8-1 win against Zachary Novick at No. 5, while Michael Song won the most competitive singles match by an 8-5 count over Panepinto at No. 6.
The Shoremen close out their season Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. Centennial Conference home match against 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins.
