Panepinto Reaches Semifinals in B6 Singles
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington College men's tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, hosted by Mary Washington, yesterday and today. Freshman Justin Panepinto (Cary, N.C./Middle Creek) reached the semifinals of B6 Singles to highlight the weekend.
Panepinto defeated Penn State-Harrisburg's Karim Fahmy, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, he beat Goucher's Pat Murnin, 6-2, 6-0. In the semifinals, Panepinto lot to Dickinson's Josh Kaseff, 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Vishnu Rajes (Yercaud, India/St. John's) competed in Championship singles for the Shoremen. In the first round, he lost to William Bannister of Washington and Lee, 6-0, 6-0, and then withdrew from the consolation bracket.
Rajes and senior Ryan Holtschneider (Kingsville, Md./Perry Hall) teamed up in Championship Doubles. They opened play with an 8-2 win against Haverford's Daisuke Nakayama and Jake Youse in the first round. In the second round, they lost to the Carnegie Mellon tandem of Bryce Beisswanger and Yuvraj Kumar, 8-1.
In B1 Singles play, Holtschneider lost to Bridgewater's Christian Lynn in the first round, 7-5, 6-1. Due to an injury withdrawal, he then advanced into the consolation semifinals, where he lost to Grove City's Peter Riley, 8-4.
Sophomore Jeremy Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) began B2 Singles play with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to Christopher Newport's Max Katcher in the first round. In the consolation quarterfinals, he lost to Salisbury's Shanon Gunther, 8-2.
Sophomore Zachary Novick (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Township) started B3 Singles play by beating Hampden-Sydney's Houston Wilson, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, he was trailing Randolph's Brad Strober, 6-3, 1-6, 2-0, before being forced to retire with an injury.
Sophomore Manny Keiler (Meriden, Conn./Orville H. Platt) lost to Colby Beighey of Grove City, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round to open B4 Singles competition. In the consolation quarterfinals, he fell to Ferrum's Taylor Napier, 8-4.
Jeremy Novick teamed with sophomore Matt Katz (Centreville, Md./Gunston School) to compete in B1 Doubles. The duo opened with a 9-7 loss to Penn State-Harrisburg's Victor Costa and Chris Magee in the first round. In the consolation quarterfinals, they lost to Elizabethtown's Mike Cannon and Alex Machalick, 8-6.
In B2 Doubles, Zachary Novick and Panepinto opened play by besting Elizabethtown's Nate Dowling and Michael Yost, 8-3, in the first round. They were then forced to withdraw from play after Zachary Novick's injury in singles play.
