22, 2009 LEWES, DE -- The Washington College women's tennis team opened its 2009 season with a 7-1 win over Division II West Chester today in a match played at Plantations Tennis in Lewes, DE. The Shorewomen won all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-4 against the Golden Rams (2-5). Freshmen Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) and Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep, MD) downed Maria Kostaris and Kara Shumock, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles. Junior Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) and freshman Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) were 8-2 winners against Teresa Grasso and Claire Afrassiabian at No. 2, while sophomore Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) and senior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) beat Chantelle Chaudoin and Allie Melhem, 8-1, at No. 3. Marshall led off singles with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Kostaris at No. 1, while Finnegan downed Afrassiabian, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2. Palmer bested Shumock, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3. Bridget Dougherty accounted for West Chester's only point of the match with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-8, win over Kelley at No. 4. Barston rounded out the scoring with an 8-2 win against Jessica Trahey at No. 5. Sixth singles did not finish. Batista was leading Chaudoin, 6-1, 1-2, when the match was called. The Shorewomen return to action Friday with two matches in Birmingham, AL. Washington will play Huntingdon at 10:30 a.m. CST and Division I Alabama-Birmingham at 2:30 p.m. CST. |
