8, 2009 SWARTHMORE, PA -- Visiting Washington College, ranked 12th in the Atlantic South, got the better of host Swarthmore College, the eighth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match today by the score of, 6-3. The Shorewomen improve to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial, while the Garnet slip to 3-6 and 2-2 respectively with the loss. It is Washington's first win over Swarthmore since 2002 when the Shorewomen downed the Garnet, 6-3, a span of seven matches. Washington took two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead against the Garnet. The freshman team of Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep (MD) and Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archemere Academy) downed Rachel Wallwork and Luann Cignavitch, 9-8, with Marshall and Finnegan winning the tiebreaker by a 11-9 tally at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Swarthmore's Kathyrn Stockbower and Alexis Hickman downed the team of junior Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) and freshman Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century), 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, senior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) and sophomore Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) bested Jennifer Trinh and Cindy Luu, 8-0. In singles, the Shorewomen won four of six to secure the win. Finnegan clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cignavitch at No. 2 singles. Kelley topped Stockbower at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2, Barston downed Trinh at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Batista swept Luu, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. The Garnet got victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Wallwork downed Marshall, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 1, while Hickman got by Palmer at No. 3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. The Shorewomen return to action next Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Ursinus. |
