Shorewomen Bring Down Hawks, 8-1
Washington Wins All Six Singles in Straight Sets

AUBURN, AL -- The Washington College women's tennis team won all six singles matches in straight sets en route to an 8-1 victory over Huntingdon College tonight in a match played indoors at Auburn University. The Shorewomen (2-0) were also scheduled to play at Division I Alabama-Birmingham today, but that match was canceled due to rain.

Washington took a 2-1 lead in doubles play. Freshmen Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep, MD) and Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) defeated Riley Prescott and Jaclyn Crossman, 8-2, at No. 1, while sophomore Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) and senior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) won by an identical score at No. 3 against Alex Dyer and Kati Bryant. The Hawks (3-2) turned the tables at No. 2 as Kristi McDaniel and Christian Vick topped freshman Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) and junior Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School), 8-2.

Marshall defeated Prescott, 7-6(6), 6-1, at the top of the singles line-up. The Shorewomen dominated second through fifth singles, losing a total of just six games in those four spots. Finnegan downed McDaniel, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, while Palmer blanked Vick, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3. Kelley defeated Crossman, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 and Barston shut out Meredith Brogden, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. Batista rounded out singles with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Dyer at No. 6.

The Shorewomen return to action March 10th with an 8:00 a.m. match against Christopher Newport in Kissimmee, FL. The Shorewomen will also play an exhibition match against Oxford College of Emory at 2:00 p.m. at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, later that day.
