2009 KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Washington College women's tennis team blanked Christopher Newport, the 12th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, 9-0, in a match played this morning at Orange Lake Resort in Kissimmee, FL. The Shorewomen (3-0) finished last season ranked 12th in the region, but opened this spring unranked. Washington dropped just six games in doubles as freshmen Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep, MD) and Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) downed Lauren Kelly and Reagan Travis, 8-2, at No. 1, freshman Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) and junior Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) were 8-2 winners against Alannah Suchomel and Kayla Connor at No. 2, and sophomore Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) and senior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) topped Kassi Avent and Megan Brooks, 8-0, at No. 3. The Shorewomen were dominant at the top two spots in singles as Marshall beat Travis and Finnegan beat Connor by identical 6-1, 6-0, scores at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Palmer bested Kelly, 7-6(4), 6-2, at No. 3, while Kelley beat Suchomel, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4. Barston was a 6-1, 6-1, winner over Avent at No. 5 and Batista bested Brooks, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6. The Shorewomen also won an exhibition match against Oxford College of Emory today, 8-1. The Shorewomen return to regular-season action tomorrow with an 8:00 a.m. match against Aquinas College in Kissimmee and a 2:00 p.m. match against South Dakota in Orlando. |
