2009 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team posted a pair of 9-0 victories today inside the Johnson Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shorewomen (9-1, 1-0 Centennial) blanked Bryn Mawr in their Centennial Conference opener before shutting out Trinity (DC) in a non-conference match. Against Bryn Mawr, freshmen Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep, MD) and Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) posted an 8-1 win over Karen Ginsburg and Anna Perrochi at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) and junior Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) downed Priscila Roney and Elizabeth Verhoerve, 8-1, at No. 2, while sophomore Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) and senior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) topped Marianne Leung and Leah Raj, 8-1, at No. 3. In singles, Marshall defeated Ginsburg, 7-6, 6-1, at No. 1; Finnegan beat Perrocchi, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2, and Palmer bested Roney, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3. Kelley recorded a 6-1, 6-4, victory against Raj a No. 4. Barston added a 6-3, 6-4, victory against Melanie Shafer at No. 5, while Batista blanked Elizabeth Olecki, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6. In the match against Trinity (DC), the Tigers played with five players, giving Washington wins by default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The Shorewomen dropped just two games in the entire match. Marshall and Finnegan beat Paola Flores and Agnes Bien-Aime, 8-0, at No. 1 doubles, while freshman Katy Ulrich (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) and sophomore Kristine Depew (Downingtown, PA/Westtown School) defeated Cynthia Reyes and Mary Ataku, 8-0, at No. 2. In singles, Finnegan breezed to a 6-0, 6-0, win over Bien-Aime at No. 1, while Marshall cruised past Flores, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. Batista notched a 6-0, 6-0, win against Reyes at No. 3, while Ulrich downed Ataku, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4. Sophomore Helen Veasey (West Newbury, MA/Proctor Academy, NH) added a 6-0, 6-0, victory over Grace Petit at No. 5. The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against 21st-ranked Johns Hopkins. |
