2009 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- The Washington College women's tennis team improved to 6-1 on the season by winning a pair of matches Friday at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. In their first match of the day, the Shorewomen breezed past previously unbeaten Bethany (KS), 8-1, dropping the Swedes' record to 4-1 on the season. Washington then downed Division II Colorado State-Pueblo, 7-2, Friday night. Against Bethany, Washington won all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-4 and went on to win five of the six singles matches. Freshmen Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep, MD) and Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) won, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles against Nyska Etienne and Beth Prier, 8-1, and won at the top two spots in singles as Marshall bested Prier, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 and Finnegan downed Etienne, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2. Elsewhere in doubles, freshman Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) and junior Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) defeated Stacie Schoon and Victoria Guedez, 8-2, at No. 2 and sophomore Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) and senior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) defeated Katelin Clawson and Jacqueline Steinle, 8-1, at No. 3. Palmer scored the match-clinching win in singles, defeating Guedez, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3. Washington added singles wins at No. 5 as Barston beat Clawson, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 and Batista topped Steinle, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6. The Swedes scored a win at No. 4 where Schoon defeated Kelley, 7-5, 6-1. In the match against CSU-Pueblo, singles were played first and Washington took five of the six spots. Finnegan played at No. 1 against the Thunderwolves and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1, win over Julie Wainwright. Marshall won by an identical score at No. 2 over Tiffany Talmadge. Palmer posted a 6-1, 6-3, victory against Andrea Ortiz at No, 3, Barston bested Cindy Boughton, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5, and Batista posted a 6-1, 6-0, victory against Meagan Clark at No. 6. CSU-Pueblo won at No. 4 where Valerie Boughton defeated Kelley, 4-6, 7-6, 10-6. In doubles, Marshall and Finnegan beat Wainwright and Ortiz, 8-2, at No. 1, while Barston and Kelley defeated Clark and Cindy Boughton, 8-2, at No. 3. Talmadge and Valerie Boughton won at No. 2 for the Thunderwolves, defeating Palmer and Batista by an 8-6 count. The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. Mountain match against Colorado Christian at Metro State College in Denver. |
