2009 KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Washington College women's tennis team split a pair of matches in Central Florida today. In their first match of the day, the Shorewomen (4-1) fell to Division I South Dakota, 4-2, in Orlando. Washington then rebounded with a 6-3 win over Aquinas, an NAIA school, in a match played in Kissimmee. The match against South Dakota was played under Division I scoring rules with one point awarded to the team which wins at least two doubles matches. The Coyotes won the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Isabel Nunez and Ashley Waltman beat WC freshman Gabie Batista (Sykesville, MD/Century) and junior Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School), 8-6, at No. 2 and Janea Hagen and Melanie Rockne defeated sophomore Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) and senior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien), 8-4, at No. 3. Washington did win at No. 1 doubles as freshmen Brittany Marshall (Dagsboro, DE/Worcester Prep, MD) and Jordan Finnegan (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Academy) bested Shadi Soleymani and Rijalda Zejnic, 8-3. In singles, South Dakota won in straight sets at No. 4 and No. 5 as Rockne downed Barston, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 and Waltman bested Batista, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 6. Washington recorded a win at No. 4 as Kelley beat Hagen, 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 2 as Marshall pulled out a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, victory. The Coyotes clinched the win when Nunez finished off a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, victory against Palmer at No. 3. Finnegan was leading Soleymani, 2-6, 6-2, 5-3, at No. 1, but that match was not completed since the Coyotes had clinched the win and both teams had a second match scheduled for later in the day. Against Aquinas, singles matches were played first and the Shorewomen won at five of those six spots. Marshall defeated Kelly Magee, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1, Finnegan beat Emily Decker, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, and Palmer downed Ceclia Vaughn, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3. Kelley was a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, winner over Katie Siegel at No. 4, while Batista notched a 6-2, 6-1, win against Kellie Herringa at No. 6. Aquinas won at No. 5 where Lauren Cherluck beat Barston, 7-5, 6-2. Marshall and Finnegan added an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Magee and Vaughn. Decker and Siegel were 8-5 winners against Batista and Palmer at No. 2, while Cherluck and Samantha Buehler recorded an 8-1 win against WC sophomore Kristine Depew (Downingtown, PA/Westtown School) and freshman Katy Ulrich (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) at No. 3. The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. Mountain match against Hastings College at the U.S. Air Force Academy. |
