2008 CARLISLE, PA -- The Washington College women's tennis team clinched the fourth and final spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament by defeating host Dickinson College, 6-3, in the completion of a Centennial Conference women's tennis match this afternoon in Carlisle, PA. The Shorewomen improved to 12-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play with the win, while the Red Devils fell to 11-7 and 6-4. Washington and Dickinson originally played on April 12th in Chestertown, MD, but Dickinson filed a protest over Washington's singles line-up and the Centennial Conference ruled the singles portion of the match was voided and must be replayed. Washington carried a 2-1 lead in the match into this afternoon as the doubles portion of the original match on April 12th was upheld. Sophomore Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) and junior Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) downed Joelle Nitzberg and Sarah Woodward, 8-1, at No. 2 and junior Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) and freshman Mary Kelley (Frederick, MD/Glenelg Country School) beat Carla Cox and Merin Yu at No. 3. Dickinson (8-7, 4-4) won at No. 1 where Anne McGillicudy and Caitlin McGovern defeated junior Rebecca Davis (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) and freshman Kristine Depew (Downingtown, PA/Westtown School), 8-2. This afternoon, the Shorewomen extended their lead to 4-1 with a pair of 6-0, 6-0, wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as Hossick downed Maya Ginsberg at No. 4 and junior Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) beat McGovern at No. 5. Kelley then clinched the match by finishing off a 6-3, 6-2, win over Melissa Nolan at No. 6. Dickinson picked up its second point at No. 1 singles as McGillicudy bested Barston, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1. Davis concluded the Washington scoring with a 0-6, 6-3, 10-4, victory at No. 2, while Woodward beat Palmer, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4, at No. 3 to round out the match. The Shorewomen will play top seed and host Johns Hopkins in a 3:00 p.m. Centennial Conference semifinal on Friday. Swarthmore and Muhlenberg will play earlier in the day in the other semifinal. The Centennial Conference Championship match is slated for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday at Johns Hopkins. |
