2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Swarthmore College, ranked 14th in Division III and sixth in the Atlantic South region topped host Washington College, the region's ninth-ranked team, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference women's tennis match today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Garnet moved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shorewomen slipped to 4-7 and 2-2 with the loss. Swarthmore swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Sonya Reynolds and Sara Sargent, the second-ranked doubles tandem in the region, posted an 8-2 win over WC junior Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and freshman Kellie Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's), ranked 27th in the region, at No. 1. Waverly Lutz and Rachel Wallwork, ranked 37th in the region, added an 8-3 win at No. 2, while Eric Lukoski and Marissa Mathews were 8-0 winners at No. 3. Jamie Midyette gave the Garnet a 4-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1, victory at No. 5, while Sargent, ranked 51st in the region in singles, clinched the match for Swarthmore with a 6-2, 6-1, win at No. 3. Lutz, the region's 58th-ranked singles player, followed with a 6-3, 6-1, win at No. 4. Bull accounted for the Shorewomen's point in the match with a 6-3, 3-2 (retired) win at No. 2. That victory completed a 4-0 week in singles for Bull. Singles play concluded with a 6-2, 7-6(4) win for Wallwork, ranked 29th in the region, over Daciek, ranked 31st, at No. 1 and a 6-2, 6-3, victory for Lukoski at No. 6. The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Bryn Mawr. |
