Shorewomen Play in
ITA Southeast Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- The Washington College women's tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Regionals hosted by Mary Washington this weekend. Three Shorewomen played in Championship Draw singles, while five played in Blue Draw singles. Two Washington doubles teams played in Championship Draw doubles, while two played in Blue Draw doubles.

Sophomores Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) advanced to the second round in Championship Draw singles. Bull beat Catholic's Rachel Tenuta, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round and then fell to third-seeded Sonya Reynolds of Swarthmore, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round. Hossick bested Priya Amar of Haverford, 6-1, 6-3, in the first round before losing to top-seeded Amy Staloch of Carnegie Mellon, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round.

Freshman Carrie Palmer (Dallas, TX/Greenhill School) dropped her first round match in Championship Draw singles, but bounced back to defeat Sydney Williford of Meredith, 8-1, in the first consolation round. In the second consolation round, Palmer then fell to 11th-seeded Tanya Gulnick of Johns Hopkins, 8-2.

In Blue Draw singles, junior Ryoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) defeated Seda Ambartsumia of Catholic, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round and then fell to Frannie Shivae of Christopher Newport, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round. Senior Erika Kayukawa (Gifu, Japan/St. Mary's Girls School) was a 6-3, 6-3, winner over Christine Han of Hollins in the first round, but then fell to Jackie Burr of Salisbury, 6-2, 6-0, in the second round. Sophomore Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) defeated Lia Williams of Guilford, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round, before falling to Candice Dalton of Hollins, 6-4, 6-0, in the second round.

Sophomore Rebecca Davis (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) and freshman Sarah Macht (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) each dropped their opening matches in Blue Draw singles. Davis then bested Frederica von Euw of Swarthmore, 8-4, in the first consolation round. Macht then bested Hannah Parsons of Mary Washington, 8-1, in the first consolation round. In the second consolation round, Davis fell to Dickinson's Erica Tobias, 8-6, while Macht lost to Mary Washington's Priscilla Jamison, 8-2

In Championship Draw doubles, Bull and Palmer lost their first round match, but then defeated Kathryn Maples and Williford from Meredith, 8-6, in the first consolation round. Bull and Palmer then fell to Stepahnie Leblang and Lindsey Pantele of Christopher Newport, 9-7, in the consolation quarterfinals. Hossick and Barston lost their first round match in Championship Draw doubles and lost in the first consolation round.

In Blue Draw doubles, Davis and Macht bested Amy Blouet and Andrea Moreau of Hollins, 8-2, in the first round before being eliminated by Kate Malpeli and Amy Sheetz of Mary Washington, 8-0, in the second round. Kayukawa and Sawada lost their first round match, but rebounded to defeat Han and Lucy Thompson of Hollins, 8-1, in the first consolation round. In the consolation quarterfinals, Kayukawa and Sawada lost to Lindsey Hosier and Kristin Taylor of Guilford, 8-0.

The Washington College women's tennis team will compete at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational in Newport News, VA, October 13th-15th.
