Kayukawa & Sawada Compete at
Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- Junior Ryoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) and senior Erika Kayukawa (Gifu, Japan/St. Mary's Girls School) represented the Washington College women's tennis team at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational of Newport News held Friday through today.

Sawada and Kayukawa both played in "D-1" singles and teamed together to play in "D" doubles. Kayukawa lost her first round singles match to Temple's Whitney Tillman, 6-2, 6-3, before besting George Mason's Jen Kramer, 8-2, in the first consolation round. Kayukawa then beat Shannon Sabo of Virginia Wesleyan, 8-5, in the consolation quarterfinals and defeated Winston-Salem State's Ashley Hopper, 8-0, in the consolation semifinals. Kayukawa lost to consolation final to Jessica Nixon of Radford, 8-1.

Sawada dropped her first round singles match to Mary Washington's Kate Malpelli, 6-1, 6-1, and then fell to Pittsburgh's Michele Petraskol, 9-8(4), in the consolation quarterfinals.

In doubles, Sawada and Kayukawa fell to Annie Day and Barrett Donner of James Madison in the first round, 8-0.
