2007 ELIZABETHTOWN, PA -- Host Elizabethtown College, the 11th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, won four of the six singles matches to post a 5-4 women's tennis win over visiting Washington College, the ninth-ranked team in the region, Saturday in Elizabethtown, PA. The Blue Jays improved to 15-2 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 4-6 with the loss. The Shorewomen held a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Washington junior Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and freshman Kellie Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's), ranked 27th in the Atlantic South in doubles, beat Stacy Shapiro and Emma Smith, ranked 26th in the region, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. WC sophomore Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and sophomore Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) posted an 8-6 win at No. 2 and Elizabethtown's Heather Lander and Jessica Russell were 8-4 winners at No. 3. Shapiro, ranked 54th in the region in singles, topped Daciek, ranked 31st, 7-6(3), 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Elizabethtown's other singles wins came from Emily Swarr (5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3), Alice Yu (6-4, 6-2 at No. 4), and Lander (6-4, 6-0 at No. 5). Washington's singles wins came at No. 2, where Bull bested Smith, 6-0, 4-6, 7-6(9), and at No. 6, where Foster was a 6-4, 6-4, winner against Russell. The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home match against Swarthmore, the 19th-ranked team in all of Division III. |
