2007 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Carnegie Mellon, ranked 10th in Division III and fourth in the Atlantic South region, defeated host Washington College, ranked ninth in the Atlantic South, 7-2, in a women's tennis match today at Schottland Tennis Center. The Tartans improved to 7-4 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 3-4 with the loss. Carnegie Mellon won two of the three doubles matches, including an 8-2 win by Mona Iyer and Amy Staloch, the third-ranked doubles team in the region, over junior Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and freshman Kellie Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's), the region's 27th-ranked tandem, at No. 1. Washington's doubles win came at No. 2, where sophomore Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and sophomore Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) bested the region's 12th-ranked doubles team, Andrea Meythaler and Alisa Liebowitz, 8-6. All six of the Tartans' players in the singles line-up came into the match regionally-ranked. Staloch, the top ranked player in the region, beat Daciek, the 31st-ranked singles player in the region, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1. Washington's singles win came at No. 6 where Foster defeated Claire Weiss, ranked 50th in the region, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9). "It was a good weekend of tennis for us," remarked Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis, whose Shorewomen opened Centennial Conference play with a 9-0 win at Ursinus yesterday. "Our freshman continue to gain confidence. We're playing really well in doubles right now. As we get healthier, I think our team will hit its stride." The Shorewomen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference match at Haverford. |
