13, 2006 SWARTHMORE, PA -- Host Swarthmore College, the 25th-ranked team and Division III and sixth-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, bested visiting Washington College, ranked eighth in the Atlantic South, 6-3, in a women's tennis match for first place in the Centennial Conference this afternoon. The Garnet improved to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in conference play by winning the match, which lasted nearly four hours. The Shorewomen fell to 12-4 and 7-1 with the loss. Washington won at No. 1 doubles where sophomore Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and senior Beth Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's), the 10th-ranked doubles team in the region, recorded a 9-8(2) win over Erika Lukoski and Jennie Park. Waverly Lutz and Sara Sargent prevailed for Swarthmore at No. 2, winning, 9-7, against sophomore Blake Leeser (Irvington, NY/Irvington) and Freshman Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School). Emily Townsend and Jenna Adelberg were 8-4 winners for the Garnet at No. 3 against Washington freshman Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) and senior Lyndsey Beidle (Linthicum, MD/North County). Swarthmore's Sonya Reynolds, ranked fifth in the region in singles, bested Daciek, ranked 16th in the region in singles, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Park ranked 17th in the region, beat Foster, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 2. Sargent provided Swarthmore with a 6-4, 6-3, victory over Bull at No. 4 and Lutz posted a 6-1, 6-3, win over Washington sophomore Ryoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) at No. 6. The Shorewomen's singles wins came at No. 3, where Hossick downed Townsend, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, and at No. 5, where Leeser bested Lukoski, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(3). "This was a great college match," remarked Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "Both teams competed really hard and both deserved to win. We have to give a lot of credit to Swarthmore who was the better team today. We look forward to playing them again in the Centennial Conference Playoffs." The Shorewomen return to action Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. match at Carnegie Mellon, the 14th-ranked team in Division III and the fourth-ranked team in the Atlantic South. |
