WC Handles Mules in CC Semis, 8-1
Washington to Face Swarthmore in Championship

SWARTHMORE, PA -- The Washington College women's tennis team, ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region, defeated Muhlenberg, ranked ninth in the region, 8-1, in a Centennial Conference semifinal match today at Swarthmore. The Shorewomen improved to 16-5, tying their school record for wins in a season, while the Mules fell to 8-8.

Washington swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Sophomore Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and senior Beth Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's), the 11th-ranked doubles team in the region, bested Amy Schmidt and Jenn Powell, 8-4, at No. 1. Freshman Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and sophomore Blake Leeser (Irvington, NY/Irvington) added an 8-5 win over Pam Kimmelman and Carly Rotfeld at No. 2, while freshman Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) and freshman Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) were 8-1 winners against Stacy Lipschutz and Jacquelyn Magner at No. 3.

Washington won five of the six singles matches. Foster recorded a 6-2, 6-0, win against Kimmelman at No. 2, Bull defeated Rotfeld, 6-2, 5-7, 10-4, at No. 3, and Hossick beat Powell, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4. Leeser added a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Lipschutz at No. 5, while sophomore Ryoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) beat Kelly Fraser, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6. Schmidt, ranked third in the region in singles, recorded the Mules' only point with a 6-1, 6-2, victory against Daciek, ranked 24th in the region in singles, at No. 1.

"Today, we not only competed well, but we also played well very. It was one of our best matches of the season," remarked WC head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "It's great to see that our team is peaking at the right time as we begin post-season play."

The Shorewomen's first 16-win season came in 1991, when they finished 16-2.

The Shorewomen will play host Swarthmore in tomorrow's Centennial Conference Championship match at 12:00 p.m.
