4, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team won its first Centennial Conference match of the spring, defeating Johns Hopkins, who is ranked eighth in the Atlantic South region, 6-2. The Shorewomen also defeated non-conference opponent Piedmont College, 6-3 Saturday afternoon in Chestertown, MD. The Shorewomen improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play in dual matches this spring. The Blue Jays fell to 0-1 (0-1) while the Lions fell to 0-2 overall. At No. 1 doubles against Hopkins, sophomore Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and senior Beth Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's), ranked 15th in the Atlantic South region in doubles, defeated Brittany Matava and Becky Busch, 8-5. Freshman Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and freshman Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) defeated Tanya Gulnik and Jill Seidman, 8-5, at No. 2. Sophomore Blake Leeser (Irvington, NY/Irvington) and freshman Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) posted an 8-4 victory at No. 3 over Stephanie Carr and Debbie Blass. In singles against the Blue Jays, Bull was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Busch at No. 3., while Hossick was a 6-2, 6-0, winner over Blass at No. 4. Leeser posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Seidman at No. 5. Washington College head coach Constatine Anandiadis notes "Today's victory over Johns Hopkins is by far the biggest women's victory since I have been coaching here at Washington College." Against Piedmont, Washington swept all six singles matches. Ranked 20th in the Atlantic South region, Daciek defeated Lindsey Hughes, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1. Foster won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-3 against Mandy Brittain, while Bull took the victory against Jennifer Hewett, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Lesser swept Jennifer Mulligan, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Hossick swept Mindy Pfeiffer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5, while Ryoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) upended Marlene Morris, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
