14, 2006 DELAND, FL -- The Washington College women's tennis team defeated Florida Institute of Technology, a Division II school, 6-3, this afternoon in DeLand, FL. The Shorewomen then played at Stetson this evening and fell to the Division I Hatters, 7-0. Washington is now 5-2 on the season. Washington picked up two points against Florida Tech before the match started as the Panthers dressed only five players and were forced to default at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. The Shorewomen won the two contested doubles matches to take a 4-0 lead in the match. Sophomore Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and senior Beth Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's) bested Nicole David and Belen Pandre, 8-4, at No. 1, while sophomore Blake Leeser (Irvington, NY/Irvington) and freshman Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) were 8-5 winners over Michaela Horvathova and Stephanie Monaco at No. 2. Freshman Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kimoya Tucker at No. 4 singles and sophomore Ryoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win over Monaco at No. 5 singles to complete the Shorewomen's 6-3 win over Florida Tech. Washington's most competitive match against Stetson came at No. 1 doubles where Daciek and Foster fell to Milica Milovanovic and Marina Levin, 8-7(3). The Stetson match was played according to Division I women's scoring rules under which one point is awarded to the team that wins at least two of the three doubles matches. "It's great to beat a Division II team and to compete against a Division I team," commented Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis. "We took a lot from these matches and are looking forward to playing Mary Washington Saturday." The Shorewomen will travel to Mary Washington Saturday for an 8:30 a.m. match against the 25th-ranked Eagles. |
