8, 2006 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis team, ranked eighth in the Atlantic South Region, defeated visiting Franklin & Marshall, ranked 12th in the region, 8-1, this afternoon at the Lifetime Fitness Center. The Shorewomen improved to 11-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play, while the Diplomats fell to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and senior Beth Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's), ranked 10th in the region in doubles, defeaed Christina Henkel and Katie Gaskins, 8-6. Freshman Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and freshman Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy) defeated Elizabeth Denenberg and Jenna Ishkanian, 8-2, at No. 2. Sophomore Blake Leeser (Irvington, NY/Irvington) and freshman Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) posted an 8-3 victory at No. 3 over Kelsey Tglus and Danielle Barish. Daciek, who is ranked 16th in the region in singles, was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles. Bull also added a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3, while Foster won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4. Leeser notched a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 5 and sophomore Royoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) added a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles. "The team competed very well today and I am very proud of them," remarked head women's tennis coach Constatine Anandiadis. "We made a close match look not so close, and I am very pleased that our program got this rare win over F&M. Today's match gives us a good amount of confidence in ourselves as we close out the regular season." In upcoming action, the Shorewomen will host conference opponent Dickinson at 1:00 p.m on Sunday. |
