Swarthmore Defeats Washington, 8-1

SWARTHMORE, PA -- Host Swarthmore College, ranked 18th in Division III and fifth in the Atlantic South region, bested Washington College, the region's eighth-ranked team, 8-1, in the Centennial Conference Women's Tennis Championship match this afternoon in Swarthmore, PA. The Garnet improved to 16-2 with the win, while the Shorewomen fell to 16-6 with the loss.

In doubles, Swarthmore's Sonya Reynolds and Marissa Mathews, ranked fifth in the region, bested sophomore Allison Daciek (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and senior Beth Foster (Lothian, MD/St. Mary's), the 11th-ranked doubles team in the region, 8-4, at No. 1. Washington freshman Lydia Bull (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Kent Place School) and sophomore Blake Leeser (Irvington, NY/Irvington) picked up a 9-8(4) win at No. 2, but Swarthmore's Sara Sargent and Waverly Lutz topped freshman Kate Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) and freshman Kristen Hossick (Ashton, MD/Mount de Sales Academy), 9-8(4) at No. 3.

Reynolds, ranked fifth in the region in singles, was a 6-3, 6-1, winner over Daciek, ranked 24th in the region, at No. 1. Park, the region's 19th-ranked singles player, beat Foster, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2, while Matthews defeated Bull, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 3. Sargent added a 6-4, 6-6, (ret.) victory over Hossick at No. 4, Emily Townsend posted a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(2) victory over Leeser at No. 5, and Lutz recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win against sophomore Ryoko Sawada (Kushiro, Japan/Kushiro Koryo) at No. 6.
