11, 2004 SWEET BRIAR, VA -- The Washington College women's tennis team, tied for eighth in the Atlantic South regional rankings, defeated host Sweet Briar, ranked 14th in the region, 5-4, this afternoon. The Shorewomen, now 3-1, this season, won at the top two spots in doubles and in the top three spots in singles. In doubles, seniors Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) and senior Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 1. Junior Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) and sophomore Lyndsey Beidle (Linthicum, MD/North County) battled for what would prove to be an important win at No. 2, posting an 8-5 triumph. Browder, Nakamura, and Halpin won in singles in convincing fashion. Browder was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 1, Nakamura notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2, and Halpin chalked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3. The Shorewomen return to action tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m. match at Washington & Lee. W&L is ranked second in both the Atlantic South region and in all of Division III behind Emory.
