Browder & Nakamura Win CC Doubles
Seniors Capture Title for Third Time

SWARTHMORE, PA -- Washington College seniors Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) and Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) won the doubles championship for the third time in four years at the Centennial Conference Singles and Doubles Tournament, held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, at Swarthmore College.

Browder and Nakamura received a first-round bye and then blanked McDaniel's Ashley Baker and Sharon Desperak, 8-0, in the second round. In the quarterfinals, the WC tandem took out Muhlenberg's Pamela Kimmelman and Mackenzie Parke, 8-2. In the semifinals, Browder and Nakamura, who were the top seed in the tournament and are ranked fourth in the Atlantic South region, bested Swarthmore's Anjani Reddy and Sonja Reynolds, the tournament's third seed and the region's sixth-ranked duo, 9-8(4).

In the championship match, Browder and Nakamura defeated Muhlenberg's Gena Ross and Amy Schmidt, the second seed in the tournament and fifth-ranked tandem in the region, 7-5, 6-2.

Browder and Nakamura, who have participated in the last two NCAA Division III Doubles Championships, won the Centennial Conference doubles title as freshmen in 2001 and again in 2003. Nakamura did not compete in the 2002 conference tournament due to an injury.

"Going out on top of the conference for the third time in four years is a great way for Ne'ko and Shoko to finish their collegiate careers. Beating two regionally-ranked teams to win this tournament helps solidify their chances to earn a third straight bid to the NCAA Championships," noted Washington head coach Constantine Ananiadis.

Nakamura also advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play this weekend. She defeated Courtney Root of Ursinus, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round and Tracy Rogers of Gettysburg, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round, before losing to Swarthmore's Caroline Celano, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
