10, 2003 CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The Washington College women's tennis, ranked ninth in the Atlantic South Region, suffered its first loss of the season today, falling to Denison, 7-2, at the Lifetime Fitness Center. Denison is currently tied for third in the Central Region and tied for 12th in Division III. The Shorewomen (2-1) posted wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 6 singles. Juniors Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) and Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) won 9-8(0) at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 6 singles. Browder and Nakamura comprise the Atlantic South's fourth-ranked doubles team and are tied for ninth in Division III. A pair of regionally-ranked singles players squared off at No. 1 singles, where Meridith Sulser, tied for 21st in the Central, topped Browder, 12th in the Atlantic South, 6-4, 6-2. Nakamura took Lavoie, tied for 19th in the Central, to three sets at No. 2 singles, but Lavoie pulled out the 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1 win. The Shorewomen return to action March 19th with their Centennial Conference opener, a 4:00 p.m. match at Ursinus.
