27, 2003 HAVERFORD, PA -- Washington College juniors Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) and Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) won their second Centennial Conference doubles title this weekend at the Centennial Conference Tournament, hosted by Haverford College. Nakamura also advanced to the final match in singles play. Browder and Nakamura, who the doubles crown in 2001, began their march to the title with am 8-3 win over Liz Crowe and Amanda Lease over Johns Hopkins in the second round. They then defeated Bertina Hu and Clementine King of Bryn Mawr, 8-0, in the quarterfinals and Emily Oster and Amy Schmidt of Muhlenberg, 8-4 in the semifinals before defeating Elli Suzuki and Kristina Pao of Swarthmore, 6-3, 6-0 in the final. Senior Devon Hufnal (Dover, DE/Dover) and freshman Jaclyn Moore (Wenonah, NJ/Gateway Regional) also competed in doubles, besting Ann Copper and Lauren Perze of Haverford, 8-6 in the first round before falling to Pao and Suzuki, 8-3, in the second round. In singles, Hufnal, Browder, and Nakamura all easily won their first round matches. Hufnal beat Gettysburg's Meredith Masters, 6-0, 6-1, while Browder and Nakamura won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores over Geneve Kallins of McDaniel and Lauren Thomas of Ursinus, respectively. Hufnal lost in the second round to Suzuki, 6-1, 6-1, but Browder beat Jen Hurford of Haverford, 6-1, 6-1, and Nakamura downed Jenny Dubow of Franklin & Marshall, 6-1, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Browder bested Pao, 6-1, 6-3, while Nakamura was a 6-0, 6-2 winner against Vandna Jerath of Johns Hopkins. Browder and Nakamura then met in the semifinals, where Nakamura upset her top-seeded teammate, 7-5, 6-4. Nakamura lost in the final, 6-1, 6-0, to Gena Ross of Muhlenberg.
