30, 2002 FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- The Washington College women's tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Regionals Saturday, Sunday, and this morning at Mary Washington College. Juniors Ne'ko Browder (Bronx, NY/Herbert H. Lehman) and Shoko Nakamura (Osaka, Japan/Osaka Jogakuin) advanced to the semifinals in the main draw of doubles play, while Browder reached the quarterfinals in the main draw of singles play. After dropping her opening match in "B draw" singles, sophomore Samantha Halpin (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) won five straight matches in the consolation bracket, including the final. Browder and Nakamura began their run with an 8-1 win over Beatrice-Anne Kirkbright and Alissa Leone of Franklin & Marshall. In the second round, the WC duo bested Anya Moysten and Anjani Naidu of Haverford. In quarterfinal play, Browder and Nakamura topped Mackenzie Parke and Gena Ross off Muhlenberg, 8-4. Washington & Lee's Lindsay Hagerman and Erika Proko ended Browder and Nakamura's run, 8-2, in the semifinals. Browder's run in main draw singles started with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mary Baldwin's Lea Spencer in the first round and a 6-3, 6-4 win over Washington & Lee's Brandi Jane Wedgeworth in the second round. Browder defeated Mary Washington's Karli Schneider, 7-5, 6-4, in the third round, before falling to Carla Simpson of Methodist, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round. Halpin lost her opening match in "B draw" singles to Kristen Agee of Mary Washington, 6-1, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, Halpin posted an 8-0 win over Ann Brander of Mary Baldwin before receiving a second-round bye. In the third round of consolation play, Halpin was an 8-1 winner over Carnegie Mellon's Crystal Fong. She then topped Robin Blanda of Cabrini, 8-4, in the consolation quarterfinals and Laura Denson of Sweet Briar, 8-6, in the consolation semifinals to reach the consolation final where she defeated Leigh Smith of Meredith, 8-3. Also at the tournament, Nakamura and senior Devon Hufnal (Dover, DE/Dover) each won their opening round match in main draw singles. Nakamura defeated Mo Hegedus of Catholic, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, before being eliminated by Marie Trimble of Washington & Lee, 7-6, 0-6, 6-2. Hufnal topped Grove City's Erika Hauge, 6-2, 6-0, before losing to Caroline Celano of Swarthmore, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2. The Shorewomen's other win in the tournament came in "B draw" doubles, where sophomore Katie Hickman (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) and freshman Jaclyn Moore (Wenonah, NJ) bested Lindsey Biegine and Carly Blumberg of Hollins, 8-6. Hickman and Moore lost in the second round, 8-1, to Kristen Agee and Susan Goodwin of Mary Washington. The Shorewomen will open their 2002 spring season February 15 with a home match against St. Mary's (MD). Full Washington College results from the ITA Southeast Regionals appear below.
