24, 2008 Morse Wins Three
Individual Golds at CC Champs Senior Also Wins Four Relay Medals;
Shorewomen Win 11 Total Medals LANCASTER,
PA - Senior Megan Morse (Easton, MD/Sts. Peter & Paul) won three individual
gold medals and swam on four medal-winning relay teams as the Washington College
women's swim team finished third of eight teams at the 2008 Centennial Conference
Championships this weekend at Franklin & Marshall College. Freshman Rachel
Glasser (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) won a pair of individual silver medals,
sophomore Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) won an individual
bronze medal, and Washington medaled in all five relay events - including a gold
in the 800 freestyle relay. Day One The
Shorewomen got the meet off to a great start on Friday, medaling in all five events
held on the first day of the championships. Morse won gold in the 200
individual medley in a Washington College season-best time of 2:13.98. Glasser
took silver in the 500 freestyle in a WC season-best and NCAA provisional
qualifying time of 5:06.76 to become the Shorewomen's third-fastest swimmer ever
in that event. Gerhart won bronze in the 50 freestyle in a WC season-best
time of 24.96. Washington also took bronze in both of Friday's relay events. Gerhart,
Morse, sophomore Liz Thomas (Towson, MD/Notre Dame Prep), and Glasser won
bronze in the 200 freestyle relay in a school record time of 1:40.63, while sophomore
Amy Smith (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area), Thomas, Glasser, and senior
Nicole Stanton (Columbia, MD/Hammond) took bronze in the 400 medley relay
in a WC season-best time of 4:09.10.
Also on
Friday, Smith finished 11th in the 500 freestyle in 5:24.38 after becoming the
10th-fastest Shorewoman ever in that event with a time of 5:24.34 in the preliminaries.
Thomas was 15th in the 50 freestyle on Friday in 26.07, while senior Nicole
Ludwig (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) was 16th in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.21.
Day
Two The Shorewomen won three more medals on Saturday. Morse captured gold
in the 200 freestyle in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:54.77, a WC season-best
time that made her the Shorewomen's second-fastest swimmer ever in that event.
She also swam an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:55.52 in the preliminaries.
Morse, Gerhart, Stanton, and Glasser won gold in the 800 freestyle relay in a
school record time of 7:52.82. Smith, Thomas, Gerhart, and Morse won silver in
the 200 medley relay on Saturday in a WC season-best time of 1:52.18. Gerhart
added a fourth-place finish in the 100 butterfly in a WC season-best time of 59.18,
while Thomas was fifth in the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best time of 1:11.09,
making her the Shorewomen's fourth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Freshman
Laura Lazenby (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth) placed seventh in the 400 individual
medley in 5:00.47 and Ludwig took eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.73 to
round out Washington's finishers in the top eight in Saturday's events. The
Shorewomen's other individual point scorers on Saturday included junior Andrea
Cole (Felton, DE/Caesar Rodney) taking ninth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.93,
Smith placing ninth in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.73, sophomore Cailin Eisele
(Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) finishing 10th in the 100 butterfly
in 1:01.62, junior Kimber Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) placing 11th
in the 400 individual medley in a WC season-best time of 4:57.86 and 12th in the
100 backstroke in 1:04.60, Stanton taking 13th in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.77,
and junior Brittany Siburt (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) finishing 15th
in the 200 individual medley in 5:10.95. Day
Three
Morse picked up her third individual gold medal on Sunday by winning
the 100 freestyle with a school record time of 53.23, which was also an NCAA provisional
qualifying time. Morse, Gerhart, Stanton, and Glasser became the fifth Shorewoman
relay team to medal at the meet, winning silver in the 400 freestyle relay in
a school-record time of 3:38.03. Glasser added a silver medal in the 1650 freestyle
by swimming a WC season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:41.62.
Gerhart was fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.59, while Glasser took
fifth in the 200 butterfly in 2:17.04 after swimming a WC season-best and NCAA
provisional qualifying time of 2:08.44 in the preliminaries to become the Shorewomen's
second-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Smith also turned in a fifth-place
finish on Sunday, swimming a WC season-best time of 2:14.72 in the 200 backstroke. Shoemaker was eighth
in the 200 backstroke in 2:16.86 to become the Shorewomen's ninth-fastest swimmer
ever in that event.
Nine other Shorewomen scored
points in individual events on Sunday. Ludwig was ninth in the 200 breaststroke
in 2:36.82, while Eisele was 10th in the 200 butterfly in 2:18.88 to become Washington's
10th-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Cole was 12th in the 200 breaststroke
in 2:41.14, while Lazenby was 13th in the 1650 freestyle in 19:00.40. Stanton,
Thomas, and Siburt each had a 14th-place finish. Stanton was 14th in the 100 freestyle
in 56.05 to become the Shorewomen's ninth-fastest swimmer in that event, Thomas
was 14th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:42.63, and Siburt was 14th in the 200 butterfly
in 2:27.59. Junior Cara Choplin (West Deptford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) added
a 15th-place finish in the 200 butterfly in 2:28.06, while junior Anna Green
(St. Louis, MO/Principia) was 15th in the 1650 freestyle in 19:03.02.
