21-23, 2003 LANCASTER, PA -- The Washington College Shorewomen won 13 medals, broke five school records, and swam to 16 NCAA B Cut times and one NCAA A Cut time en route to a fourth-place finish at this weekend's Centennial Conference Championships, held at Franklin & Marshall College. Senior Pam Vasquez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Delcampo Institute) provided the top highlight of the meet by swimming to an A Cut time in the 500 freestyle. Vasquez won the race in 5:02.89, breaking her own conference record of 5:04.06, set in 2001. Vasquez also won gold in the 1650 freestyle in an NCAA B Cut time of 17:36.94 and won silver in the 200 freestyle in 1:57.47. Vasquez also swam to an NCAA B Cut time of 5:09.93 in the 500 freestyle preliminaries. Senior Stacy Sines (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) took gold in the 200 freestyle in an NCAA B Cut time of 1:55.46 after swimming to an NCAA B Cut time of 1:56.09 in the preliminaries. She won silver in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 54.58. In the 500 freestyle, she won the bronze medal in a NCAA B Cut time of 5:09.99 after swimming to an NCAA B Cut time of 5:08.69 in the preliminaries. Junior Margaret Klag (Silver Spring, MD/Sherwood) broke her own school record in tying for the gold medal in the 200 breaststroke. She swam to an NCAA B Cut time of 2:24.96 in the finals after recording an NCAA B Cut time of 2:28.63 in the preliminaries. She also won the silver medal in the 100 breaststroke, swimming to an NCAA B Cut time of 1:07.53 after recording an NCAA B Cut time of 1:07.68 in the preliminaries. Senior Julie Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie) won the silver medal in both the 100 and 200 butterfly. In the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly, she broke the school record by finishing in a NCAA B Cut time of 2:09.71. In the finals, she earned the silver medal by swimming to an NCAA B Cut time of 2:10.52. In the 100 butterfly, Meirs swam an NCAA B Cut time of 59.98 in the finals after swimming to an NCAA B Cut time of 59.48 in the preliminaries. The Shorewomen also took bronze in three relay events. In the 200 medley relay, sophomore Ana Prado (La Coruna, Spain/Tirso), Klag, Meirs and Sines swam to a school record and NCAA B Cut time of 1:51.91 to win the bronze. That same quartet swam to a school record and NCAA B Cut time of 4:01.93 to take the bronze in the 400 medley relay. Remarkably, that time was lower than the previous conference record of 4:02.20, but was third-fastest in this race. The Shorewomen's 800 freestyle relay team of Sines, senior Sara Hardy (Birchrunville, PA/Owen J. Roberts), senior Rebecca Sirman (Westminster, MD/North Carroll), and Vasquez won the bronze in 7:59.84. Gettysburg won the meet with 744 points, followed by Franklin & Marshall (620.5), Swarthmore (563), the Shorewomen (506.50). Dickinson (460), McDaniel (328), Bryn Mawr (174) and Ursinus (159).
