Shorewomen Roll to 11-0

WESTMINSTER, MD -- The Washington College Shorewomen improved to 11-0 overall and 6-0 in the Centennial Conference with a 75-20 win at Western Maryland this afternoon. The Shorewomen are one dual meet away from an undeated season. Standing in their way is the Swarthmore Garnet Tide, the defending Centennial Conference champions.

In today's win over Western Maryland, the Shorewomen took first place in all but one event. Junior Stacy Sines (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) and sophomore Margaret Klag (Silver Spring, MD/Sherwood) each won two events. Sines captured first in the 200 individual medley in 2:15.43 and in the 500 freestyle in 5:11.90. Klag won the 100 freestyle in 57.13 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.63.

Four Shorewomen each won one event. Junior Pam Vasquez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Delcampo Institute) took the 200 freestyle in 2:03.68, junior Sarah Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) paced the 50 freestyle in 26.66, freshman Ana Prado (La Coruna, Spain/Tirso) won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.04, and senior Vanessa Makarewicz (Manchester, CT/Manchester) captured first in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.95.

Washington also won both relays. Makarewicz, Klag, junior Julie Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie), and Cooper swam a 1:56.76 in the 200 medley and Makarewicz, Prado, Sines, and Vasquez won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.89.

The Shorewomen recorded six individual second-place finishes on the day. Sophomore Carolyn Myers (Lititz, PA/Linden Hall School for Girls) was second in the 200 freestyle (2:05.88) and the 500 freestyle (5:38.81). Junior Sara Hardy (Birchrunville, PA/Owen J. Roberts) took second in the 1000 freestyle in 11.24.74, while freshman Samantha Shaffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.47. Performances by Prado (50 freestyle, 26.78) and Meirs (100 butterfly, 1:02.34) rounded out the second-place finishes for WC.

The Shorewomen will put their 23-consecutive dual meet win streak on the line against Swarthmore in a home meet at 6:30 p.m. this Wednesday.
