4, 2001 CHESTER, PA - Sophomore Margaret Klag (Silver Spring, MD/Sherwood) broke her own school record in the 100 breaststroke for the second time in less than a week as the Washington College Shorewomen stayed undefeated at 5-0 with a 127-51 dual-meet win at Widener this evening. The Shorewomen swept every event and have now finished first in 43 consecutive dual-meet races that they have entered for scoring. Klag's record finish of 1:07.22 in the breast shaved .13 seconds off the WC record she set just this past weekend at the ECAC Championships. Klag originally broke the school mark in that event last season. Her time also marked the second meet in a row where she has posted an NCAA Championships qualifying time in the 100 breaststroke. Klag added a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle as well, finishing in 25.76. Junior Pam Vasquez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Delcampo Institute) won two events, taking first in the 500 freestyle (5:29.49) and 1000 freestyle (10:56.87). Junior Sara Hardy (Birchrunville, PA/Owen J. Roberts) won the 200 freestyle in 2:04.77 and freshman Ana Prado (La Coruda, Spain/Tirso) won the 100 in 57.23 to round out the individual freestyle events. Prado added anothe first-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:18. Junior Julie Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie) captured first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.58), while senior Vanessa Makarewicz (Manchester, CT/Manchester) won the 100 backstroke (1:03.92). WC's 200 medley relay team of Makarewicz, freshman Samantha Shaffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown), freshman Emily Rawson (Derwood, MD/Montgomery), and Klag finished first in 1:56.74 and the 200 freestyle relay quartet of Prado, Hardy, Makarewicz, and Vasquez won in 1:47.03. The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 6:00 p.m. home meet against Goucher. |
