Shorewomen Roll Past Ursinus
WC Takes First in Every Event

COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Washington College women's swim team rolled to a 165-38 Centennial Conference win over Ursinus College this afternoon. The Shorewomen (2-0, 2-0 Centennial) took first place in each of the 11 events, captured second place in nine events, and swept the top three spots in five events.

In one of the events that WC went one-two-three in, the 100 butterfly, the Shorewomen put a serious dent in the school record books. Freshman Ana Prado (La Coruda, Spain/Tirso) won the event in 1:01.78, touching the wall just before junior teammate Julie Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie), who finished second in 1:01.89, and freshman teammate Emily Rawson (Derwood, MD/Montgomery) who took third in 1:02.47. Those times made that trio of Shorewomen the school's second-, third-, and fifth-fastest swimmers ever in that event, respectively.

Three other Washington swimmers won two events each. Junior Pam Vasquez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Delcampo Institute) won the 200 freestyle (2:02.91) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.25). Junior Sarah Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.86) and the 100 freestyle (56.42), while junior Rebecca Sirman (Westminster, MD/North Carroll) notched wins in the 400 individual medley (4:59.61) and the 500 freestyle (5:32.75).

Sophomore Carolyn Myers (Lititz, PA/Linden Hall School for Girls) finished first in the 1000 freestyle in 11:27.77 and sophomore Margaret Klag (Silver Spring, MD/Sherwood) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.02 to round out the individual events. Senior Vanessa Makarewicz (Manchester, CT/Manchester), freshman Samantha Shaffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown), Meirs, and Klag turned in a winning time of 4:15.26 in the 400 medley relay, while Cooper, junior Sara Hardy (Birchrunville, PA/Owen J. Roberts), Prado, and Vasquez won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.46.

The Shorewomen return to action Wednesday with their home opener, a 6:00 p.m. meet against Eastern Shore-rival Salisbury.
