Shaffer Posts NCAA Time in Win
Shorewomen Cruise Past Goucher

CHESTERTOWN, MD - Freshman Samantha Shaffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) became the fourth Washington College swimmer this season to swim an NCAA qualifying time and the Shorewomen cruised to a 136-54 dual meet win over visiting Goucher College this evening at the Casey Swim Center. The Shorewomen improved to 6-0 with the win and ran their streak of consecutive first-place finishes (non-exhibition) in dual meet races to 52 before entering the final two events as exhibitions only.

Shaffer's NCAA-qualifying time of 1:08.50 in the 100 breaststroke came in one of those exhibition events after the result of the meet had been decided. She also swam a season-best 26.20 in the 50 freestyle to take second place. Sophomore Margaret Klag (Silver Spring, MD/Sherwood), who also swam the 100 breaststroke as an exhibition entry, finished the race in 1:07.59, the third straight meet during which she has posted an NCAA qualifying time in that event.

Junior Pam Vasquez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Delcampo Institute), freshman Ana Prado (La Coruda, Spain/Tirso), and junior Sarah Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) each won two events for WC. Vasquez claimed the 200 freestyle (2:05.28) and the 500 freestyle (5:26.34), while Prado finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:18.35) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.26). Cooper swam a WC season-best time of 55.60 in the 100 freestyle and also took first in the 50 freestyle in 25.91.

Sophomore Carolyn Myers (Lititz, PA/Linden Hall School for Girls) won the 1000 freestyle in 11:21.21 and junior Julie Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie) finished first in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.77 to round out Washington's individual first-place finishes.

Senior Vanessa Makarewicz (Manchester, CT/Manchester) joined Shaffer, Meirs, and Klag to win the meet-opening 200 medley relay in 1:55.92.

The Shorewomen are back in action tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet at Bryn Mawr.
