17, 2001 CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Washington College women's swim team continues to dominate in dual meet action. The Shorewomen posted a 137-73 win over visiting Centennial Conference rival Franklin & Marshall this afternoon at the Casey Swim Center to up their record to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Shorewomen took first place in each of the first nine events before swimming only exhibitions in each of the final two. WC swimmers have now won the last 32 races they have entered for scoring. The victory featured over ten season- and lifetime-best times for Washington swimmers in individual events. Junior Sarah Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) swam a lifetime-best time of 2:16.48 in the 200 individual medley, finishing in first place and becoming WC's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Another WC swimmer, freshman Samantha Shaffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown), finished the day at number three among WC's top-five all-time 200 breaststroke swimmers. Shaffer swam a 2:34.05 as an exhibition entry. WC opened the meet by going one-two in the 400 medley relay. Senior Vanessa Makarewicz (Manchester, CT/Manchester), sophomore Margaret Klag (Silver Spring, MD/Sherwood), junior Julie Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie), and Cooper finished first in 4:11.16, while junior Sara Hardy (Birchrunville, PA/Owen J. Roberts), freshman Samantha Shaffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown), freshman Emily Rawson (Derwood, MD/Montgomery), and sophomore Carolyn Myers (Lititz, PA/Linden Hall School for Girls) took second in 4:18.05. Cooper finished first in the 100 freestyle, swimming a season-best 2:16.48, to go along with her performance in the 200 IM. Junior Pam Vasquez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Delcampo Institute) posted a pair of first-place finishes and season bests, completing the 1000 freestyle in 10:42.21 and finishing the 500 freestyle in 5:18.55. Junior Rebecca Sirman (Westminster, MD/North Carroll) also won two individual events, swimming a season-best 2:04.30 in the 200 freestyle and touching the wall at 2:19.70 in the 200 backstroke. Washington's two other individual firsts were turned in by Klag (50 freestyle, 25.73) and Meirs (200 butterfly, 2:13.58). The Shorewomen return to action November 30th for the start of the three-day ECAC Championships at Gloucester County Institute of Technology. |
