15, 2002 ELIZABETHTOWN, PA -- The Washington College women's swim team won its 20th consecutive dual meet tonight with a 131-74 victory at Elizabethtown. The Shorewomen, now 8-0 this season, have not lost a dual meet since their opening meet of the 2000-01 campaign. Juniors Pam Vasquez (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Delcampo Institute) and Stacy Sines (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) each won two individual events for the Shorewomen. Vasquez finished first in the 200 freestyle in 2:04.10 and first in the 500 freestyle in 5:33.20, while Sines won the 1000 freestyle in 10:57.95 and the 100 freestyle in 56.42. Sophomore Margaret Klag (Silver Spring, MD/Sherwood) rounded out a WC sweep of the freestyle events with a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 26.45. Freshmen Emily Rawson (Derwood, MD/Richard Montgomery) and Samantha Shaffer (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) accounted for Washington's other two individual wins. Rawson won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.49, while Shaffer, swimming in her hometown, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.85. The Shorewomen also turned in four second-place finishes in the individual events. Junior Julie Meirs (Cream Ridge, NJ/Peddie) finished the 100 butterfly in 1:02.55, just narrowly behind Rawson, while freshman Ana Prado (La Coruda, Spain/Tirso) touched the wall in the 100 freestyle just over one-tenth of a second after Klag, finishing in 26.56. Junior Sarah Cooper (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall) was WC's top finisher in the 200 individual medley, completing the race in 2:24.27. Sophomore Carolyn Myers (Lititz, PA/Linden Hall School for Girls) placed second in the 500 freestyle in 5:40.78. Washington won both relay events. Senior Vanessa Makarewicz (Manchester, CT/Manchester) teamed with Shaffer, Meirs, and Cooper to win the 200 medley relay in 1:57.57. Cooper, junior Sara Hardy (Birchrunville, PA/Owen J. Roberts), junior Rebecca Sirman (Westminster, PA/North Carroll), and Klag won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.68. The Shorewomen return to action Friday with a 6:00 p.m. home meet against St. Mary's (MD). |
